A dying wizard, a thousand years of spells poised to fade with him, and a kingdom that will likely follow if a successor is not found. Too bad the most likely candidate has no idea he's a wizard.

Spell Fade The Spellstone Legacy Book 1 eBook J Daniel Layfield

The story follows the path of an unwilling hero that did not know he was royalty. The Virgin Queen is dead about 20 years, the wizard that has been holding the country together and in trust for the secret son is dying slowly, and we've go an encroaching kingdom in the north. In this world if a wizard dies before passing on his spell stone then all his longterm spells die with him and fade. In the case of regenerating a country after a hard battle against dragons, this could be a problem. Our hero has to learn to accept who he is, grow into his role, and learn about himself.

Our hero is not alone. His long time undeclared love and her brother join his quest as well as a rather arrogant dragon slayer. Each character has their own desires and their own lessons that they have to learn (or fail to learn). Even though it follows a tried and true pattern there are still plenty of twists and red herrings to keep the reader on their toes. I'd like to point out some, but I also don't want to give away any spoilers. I will say that the identity of the main enemy was a large surprise to me.

The pacing on this was good. It was not too fast and it was not too slow. If you need a light read that still has adventure, you'll enjoy this. If you are someone that prefers heavier tales there is still enough happening that this should also still hold your interest. The climax and denouement were very satisfying to me, rather smooth like a mild raspberry wine.

There is one thing that I feel sets this apart from most adventures. The point of the story was not just the main character growing into their role and coming of age. This questioned the nature of reality.

Spell Fade The Spellstone Legacy Book 1 eBook J Daniel Layfield Reviews

Dartan and Aliet met as young children and became instant best friends. Suddenly, strange things begin to happen throughout the land. Crops are failing and the land is dieing. The explaination of why and how their farms are still fruitful is unbelievable. The quest Dartan is sent on seems impossible. On it rests the fate of all people. Great story!
Loved the characters. Fairly standard scenario and plot. But executed very well with a very hilarious writing style. Reminded me a bit of David Eddings Belgarian series. Not sure what else Daniel Mayfield has written, but following him and I will buy for sure. One of my most enjoyable reads this year.
I just loved this book. I loved the way the author writes easy flow. Nice not heavy book lighthearted and enjoyable. This is about a wizard realising he is a wizard. Find out who he is, finding that his life isn't quite the same as it always was. Realising his potential as a wizard and a youngman. Falling in love or realising your bestfriend is attractive all of a sudden. Loosing a father and gaining so much more of yourself.

Really nice book..
There's nothing ground breaking here, But it is a nice read. Typical coming of age story but gets a little tied up on the coming of age love story. I'd like to have learned more about the land, but I'll be looking for future books from this author as he will for sure improve and I did enjoy his imagination.
This was an enjoyable adventure that falls somewhere between epic fantasy and fairytale quest. A light, easy read, which is something that I appreciate in fantasy. There was little need for world building and all the information that we needed was woven into the story itself.

Dartan is in many ways the typical unassuming hero, but he's got his own personality. The rest of the cast is just as enjoyable and fleshed out, which makes for some great interaction with a lot of wit and banter. Easily recommended for all fantasy fans.
I can't necessarily explain why, except that it's very well written. I don't think there's any concept in the book that hasn't been used in other fantasy novels, but they're brought together into something that still feels fresh and compelling. The characters are fun, and I got a chuckle out of the "always interrupted just when they're about to kiss" ploy. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy.
Spell Fade had some intriguing moments but the characters didn't feel real to me and the end seemed rushed. If you're going to do a standard farm boy becomes king/all powerful wizard, you need to put a little more meat on those bones. I will admit though, it was well written and I stayed in it until the last page. The bones of a good story are there. I'd suggest the author spend some time on secondary character development because their backgrounds are far more interesting than the main character. Given, we only know what he knows, but to keep me interested in future books I want to hear about the good stuff. Also, many of the early scenes had far more detail than the end. I don't know if there was time pressure or what, but you could tell where the effort went. For me, it's a read if you get it on Unlimited. Maybe skip otherwise.
